I always go back to the Toontrack products (EZ Drummer and Superior Drummer). I own EZ Drummer 1 & 2, Superior Drummer 2 & 3, Get Good Drums Invasion, and Steven Slate Drums (4 and 5, I think). Ugritone their almighty midi pack frequently goes on sale for about $30). Also, you can get additional midis elsewhere (eg. The expansion packs come with their own midi sets, but you can buy more midi packs separately (note: the midi packs contained in the expansions can also be bought separately, don't pay for a midi pack you already have in the expansion). Regarding their midis: That's correct, their midi packs are just that, midi and nothing else.

Plus their website features samples of the kits as well, so just have a listen to which one(s) you think suit your style the best. Regarding the different metal expansions there's two threads on the Toontrack forum discussing this ( here and here - although they are older than some of the new expansions). For actually putting out songs you might be better off with something that's not as heavily processed and do your own thing with it. I've looked at the Death Metal EZX as well as the Library of the Extreme midi packs and am just not sure what would be the best way to go here. So I am assuming I need a kit for death metal sound along with the appropriate midi samples/grooves as well. I've seen metal midi packs being offered but also see reviews that say they don't include the "kit" for death metal. After buying the initial product, what expansions would be recommended for extreme metal, more specifically death and thrash metal? I've seen so many different products, and from a newbie perspective it seems that theres an overwhelming amount. What I am looking for here before I make my purchase is to narrow down exactly what I should get so as to avoid purchasing the wrong things or missing something essential. I am looking to buy Ezdrummer 2 to work on composing songs as a guitarist. I removed the post from there and figured here would be a better place.

Hello, I originally posted this on the music production board but didnt get too much response outside of reccomending SSD 5 free instead, but still not entirely sure on which would be the best option.
